Backpacking Indonesia – costs

Earlier than I inform you extra concerning the sights in Indonesia, I will first offer you a complete overview of the standard prices that you’ll be confronted with. I successively talk about the expenses for:

  • Lodging
  • Eat Drink
  • Transport
  • Excursions & actions

Necessary: the prices in this text are in euros. I used the current fee of 15,000 IDR = € 1.

Lately, nevertheless, the worth of the rupiah has fallen significantly, and 16,000 IDR = € 1 seems to be the provisional new price. Which means Indonesia has turn into a bit cheaper than it already was.

For probably the most current trade price, view

A room with a view: the whole lot is feasible in Indonesia

Maintain in mind that you may be much less more likely to discover a dorm (dormitory) all through Indonesia than is the case in Thailand, for instance. Then again, the advantage is that the bulk of the accommodations are attractively priced, since you’ve gotten various guesthouses throughout the nation.

The worth degree of the motels in Indonesia is considerably larger in some areas (including Jakarta, Bali and Gili Trawangan) than in the less touristy destinations in the nation. When it comes to accommodation, Sumatra is likely one of the most advantageous islands to remain in.

You’ll be able to sleep in a double room for as little as € 3 to € 5, whereas the most cost effective room I might discover on Gili Trawangan was a minimum of 3 times as expensive. In Yogyakarta, for example, you’ll be able to assume a minimum of 10 euros on your personal area.

Within the common backpackers hostel you pay around € eight.50 for a room or dormitory with a shared rest room and round € 15 for a double room. In case you are on the lookout for a lodge, it will value you around € 25. Please observe, I’m talking about averages, so the costs can definitely be lower or larger!

As a check, I search by way of for a room with a double bed on the relatively costly island of Gili Trawangan. The most cost effective choice I find is Aquaddiction Dive & Bungalows the place I pay € 10.50 per night time per room with its own amenities. That is comparatively low cost, because if I look two options additional, I immediately lose € 17.50 per night time (Gili La Boheme).

The most cost effective dorm on Gili Trawangan is in The Black Pearl and costs me € 7 per night time. For this worth I can be staying in a dormitory with 4 other backpackers and I can use a shared rest room.

To make a great comparability, I do the same for Medan that’s situated on the relatively low cost Sumatra. Since only the Okay77 Guesthouse seems on, I also look briefly at Here I do indeed get more results. The most cost effective hostel that I can discover is Amelia Guesthouse. For € 7 I have a room with a double mattress right here. Even including rest room 🙂. Not dangerous then.

I can’t discover Dorms by means of each platforms in Medan. But as you possibly can see: a personal room on Medan is priced the identical as the most cost effective dorm I can discover on Gili Trawangan.

A plus is that breakfast is often included in Indonesia. Later in this text I will provide you with numerous recommendation on lodging for each vacation spot.

Meals and drink

Market in Jakarta

You should purchase probably the most colorful and recent merchandise at the local markets

As you’re used to in Asia, the local food and drinks are filth low cost. That is also the case in Indonesia. You’ll be able to already eat road food earlier than, don't be afraid, lower than € 0.50. In an area restaurant (a “warung”), you spend a mean of 1 to 2 and a half euros for a great meal. A bottle of water costs you round € 0.20 in a restaurant, while right here you pay € zero.50 for a can of soda.

If you’d like a Western menu, maintain in mind larger costs. For instance € 7 for an in depth menu together with drinks. Oh nicely, I feel that's still reasonably priced.

In case you are on the lookout for the cheaper, however tasty, spots to eat, be sure to end up at an area eatery. In Indonesia they’re also referred to as warungs. You’ll often discover many locals and the purest merchandise that the country has to supply. And the good factor is: at very engaging costs. Dishes differ between € 1 and € 2.50. I typically eat fried fish, rice and some vegetables myself. With regard to the latter, I can advocate the “jack fruit curry”.

Tip: in a warung the prepare dinner does not all the time converse English. The menu, if it is already there, will usually be written in Indonesian.

That is why I have made a lot of small translations for you: “goreng” means “fried” but principally “fried” and “nasi” “rice”. In different words: for those who order a “nasi goreng”, you get fried (“fried”) rice with some particular greens by means of it. Would you like an extra egg? Then say “nasi goreng telor”.

Typically additionally, you will see the word “satay”, I don't should inform you what that’s, I feel 🙂. However what if there’s “satay ayam” on the menu? “Ayam” means “chicken,” so that is hen saté.

The typical value per day that you simply spend on meals and drink in Indonesia will probably be between € 5 and € 7 as a finances backpacker. Nevertheless, if you wish to dive into the nightlife lots and maybe need to drink a beer recurrently, the bills will improve. Logical in fact, however I say this as a result of alcohol is sort of costly in Indonesia because of the high taxes.

One of the best-known model that is served is Bintang. Additionally it is referred to as the Heineken of Indonesia. Not shocking, because it comes from the same brewery. In case you are in a bar, rely on € 2 for a 0.33l bottle and round € three.50 for a zero.66l bottle. You possibly can shortly pay € 6 for a cocktail. Not shocking when you think about that a bottle of Jack Daniels in the native liquor store costs € 73 (!).

Lastly, in case you smoke, this is pretty low cost compared to residence. For instance, a packet of Marlboro costs a mean of € 1.20 and you’ll be able to smoke even cheaper should you go for an area model. In such instances you often pay less than € zero.60.

Pelni: crucial boat firm in Indonesia

Touring by way of Indonesia signifies that you should use several types of transport. And also you need that, since this immense country consists of greater than 17,000 totally different islands. Because the distances are giant, you will frequently guide a home flight. You will also often choose the (mini) bus, practice, shared automotive or boat as a way of transport. The scooter is in fact additionally an choice.

You will undoubtedly use the varied ferries that may take you from island to island. Transport by boat is reasonably priced, and I still categorical myself cautiously 🙂. For instance, a ticket from East Java to West Bali will value you less than € 0.50. From East Bali to Lombok about € 2.50 for (this journey takes 4 to 5 hours).

Good to know: the national delivery firm of Indonesia is Pelni and can also be the only operator that sails between the varied islands with full passenger ships. You’ve a selection of varied courses: from sitting on the deck to an air-conditioned cabin. For more info and bookings you’ll be able to check out

Incidentally, there are all the time a number of personal tour operators crusing between the vacationer islands with both sluggish and velocity boats.

On the islands themselves you possibly can opt for low cost buses or trains. For example, you pay around € 4 for an eight-hour bus trip and € eight for an evening bus. In case you are in Java, you should use the practice that connects the cities of Jakarta, Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Bandung. Should you choose the bus, you will have each the massive public buses and minivans which you could travel with.

You even have excellent alternatives in Indonesia, for instance in Bali, to discover the islands independently by scooter. Aside from the truth that that is probably the most adventurous approach of traveling, additionally it is the most cost effective. For instance, renting a moped prices you a maximum of € 4.50 per day and petrol costs are negligible.

For example, if you wish to drive a day from Yogyakarta to Surabaya, you spend lower than € 5 on gasoline plus the rental costs of € four.50. A visit by practice can easily value you € 18.

Shared automobiles are additionally widespread on certain islands. I used it lots on Sumatra. That's how I went from Medan to Bukit Lawang. For this journey I have transformed to pay € 10. Such transportation can often be booked on the lodge (s) where you’re staying.

Finally, you may as well opt for the aircraft. With greater than 230 airports, you’ve gotten at the very least sufficient selection. Know that in the case of flying the prices will probably be so much larger than for those who choose a special sort of transport to go from island to island. Nevertheless, for those who e-book in time, the costs for a aircraft ticket may be fairly favorable. Definitely should you use finances providers similar to Kalstar or Lion Air.

You’ll be able to journey by bus from Surabaya (Java) to bus station Ubung in Denpasar (Bali). This experience takes roughly ten hours and costs you between € 8 and € 14. Together with the boat journey from Java to Bali. If I search on Skyscanner for a ticket from Surabaya to Denpasar, I can already go for € 22. Not dangerous then.

Excursions and activities

A trek by way of Bukit Lawang the place I came throughout this posing Thomas Leaf monkey

The prices for actions differ significantly. I might advocate that you simply all the time examine totally different tour operators with each other, so that you simply keep away from paying (a lot) an excessive amount of. When you notice sure worth differences for the same exercise, see if that is justified.

Perhaps more luxurious transport is used or one draw merely takes longer than the opposite. It could possibly also happen that there isn’t a distinction in any respect or that desk A is just costlier than desk B. Analysis is subsequently essential.

For instance, you will pay € three for the Bunaken Nationwide Park on Sulawesi, whereas you will pay between € 25 and € 55 for the Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking, relying on the tour you choose. If you want to see orangutans in Sumatra, you pay for a trek in Bukit Lawang by means of the Gunung Leuser Nationwide Park, around € 30 per day. In case you are in Java and need to go to the favored Borobudur temple, it should value you around € 20. Planning to realize your PADI? This can be carried out in four days and in Tulamben (Bali) for example amounts to round € 360 whereas on Manado (Sulawesi) you shortly lose € 450.

Once more: these prices differ per tour operator, so pay attention to where you e-book. For many journeys you’ll be able to in fact also drive to the situation your self and get an admission ticket on the supply. This is logically the most cost effective and most adventurous 😉.

Price range per day Indonesia

General, as a finances packer it’s a must to keep in mind 255,000 IDR to 330,000 IDR (€ 17- € 22) per day. I base myself on primary accommodation, three meals, transport and every now and then a beer. Nevertheless, in the event you solely go to the vacationer spots, then your every day price range may be € 10 greater. In case you are traveling with somebody, you possibly can in fact share the cost of lodging, which can make your keep somewhat cheaper.

Do you not need to travel too low-budget? Then assume a minimal of 450,000 IDR (€ 30) per day.

Backpacking Indonesia – locations, sights and accommodations

As you (perhaps already) know, Indonesia is huge. Very giant. You’ll perceive that subsequently I can’t describe each island. In this article I choose Java, Bali, Lombok & the Gili Islands, Sulawesi, Sumatra, Flores, Kalimantan and the Moluccas.

I additionally offer you numerous strategies in terms of lodging for each destination, subdivided into totally different worth ranges.

1. Java

In this part I talk about the three principal destinations on the island of Java: Jakarta, Yogyakarta and the flower city of Bandung. To get you in the mood, a lovely photograph of the previous city:

Jakarta City View

Jakarta by night time

The backpacking space in Jakarta might be found in Jalan Jaksa and Sirih Road. You will notice many low and mid-priced guesthouses, bars, eating places, and so forth. here.

Anyway, frankly it's not a city that I recommend. In that respect, Yogyakarta has rather more allure. There are, nevertheless, some issues to see. Under an summary:

From Jalan Jaksa you possibly can stroll to cultural points of interest reminiscent of Merdeka Square and the Nationwide Museum. I might additional advocate to undoubtedly take a look at the Istiqlal Mosque. This gigantic mosque – one of many largest in Southeast Asia – is greatest visited in the morning, since there are nonetheless few tourists. Also know that as a lady you have to be utterly coated in order to enter. You do not want to have this clothing with you, however you’ll be able to organize it on the mosque.

One other suggestion is Thousand Doors Mosque, or the mosque with 1,000 doorways. You can see this mysterious structure just outdoors the center of Tangerang.

Take a day journey (or longer in fact) to the Seribu Islands, regionally referred to as Pulau Seribu. These islands are also called “the thousand islands of Jakarta”. The great factor is that this is an ideal spot if you want to escape the hectic tempo of the town and are on the lookout for paradisiacal environments. You’ll be able to dive and snorkel very properly around the islands.

The local market at Pasar Baru can also be a fun activity to undertake. That is the oldest market in all of Jakarta the place you will discover every little thing: clothing (akin to custom-made footwear and shirts), handmade gadgets and delicious meals.

Finally, do a “hidden tour” by means of the slums of the town and find out in what poor circumstances most of the locals reside. Along the best way you’ll meet probably the most pretty individuals, very impressive.

In Yogyakarta you will see that the backpack area across the Sosrowijayan district. That is the Khao San Street of Yogyakarta. You’ve gotten many good restaurants, bars and cheaper lodging here. Yogyakarta can also be referred to as “the soul” of Indonesia since it is nonetheless very conventional.

Good to know is that “Yog” is a scholar metropolis, because of the presence of various universities. In consequence, aside from a very good degree of schooling, many bars, restaurants and other locations of entertainment are current in the town.

Me at the Prambanan temple complicated

Sosrowijayan is a aspect road of Jalan Malioboro, the primary road of Yogyakarta. Right here you’ll discover road musicians, artists and numerous markets. You should purchase the whole lot you possibly can think about right here. Unfortunately additionally many pushy bicycle taxi drivers and sellers. Then you’ve gotten another challenge: stay calm and don't get irritated too shortly 🙂.

A spot that you shouldn’t overlook to go to is the Borobudur. A Buddhist shrine about 40 kilometers northwest of Yogyakarta. It’s without exception the most important Buddhist temple in the world situated between the Merapi and Merbabu volcanoes.

Perhaps less well-known, but definitely no less spectacular, is the Prambanan Temple: the most important Hindu-Javanese complicated in all of Indonesia. It’s situated roughly 18 kilometers east of Yogyakarta. It's pretty massive right here; you possibly can easily stroll around right here for half a day, and even longer. Not shocking, if you understand that there are not any fewer than 237 (!) Totally different buildings. Many have been (partly) destroyed by the current earthquake in 2006, though the restorations are underway.

In addition, a powerful ballet efficiency is given at the complicated in the evening: Ramanyana Ballet. In the background the temples are lit (although this was not the case with my most recent go to), which mixed with the show supplies an exquisite impact.

Another loopy thing to do in Java is climbing the Merapi volcano, the place you stroll to the top of the Gunung Merapi in the darkish and take pleasure in a wonderful sunrise in the morning. I do advise you to convey warm clothes and particularly good footwear. Along the best way you will cross rocks and volcanic sand that you must recover from. Good to know is that that is probably the most lively volcano in Indonesia, although the last eruption was on October 26, 2010.

Probably the most well-known volcano on Java is Mount Bromo, by the best way. Additionally on and round this mountain a trek is greater than value it. The gorgeous green environment and the colors that come up through the dawn are pictures that you will all the time keep in mind. Bromo can be mixed with another gem on Java: Ijen.

Accommodations in Yogyakarta

Lastly, a go to to the massive metropolis of Bandung is definitely worthwhile if you end up on Java. In the mean time she shouldn’t be very touristy, so the costs are a bit decrease than in Jakarta for instance.

Patengan Lake

The gorgeous Patengan Lake in Bandung

The traces of the Dutch colonial previous are also clearly seen, especially in the event you go to Jalan Braga where you will see typical Dutch buildings and texts. Furthermore, it is Bandung's buying road that has given the town the nickname “the Paris of Java”. So take into consideration giant crowds.

Tip: if you want to go to Bandung from Jakarta, achieve this by practice. Along the best way you’ll move lovely landscapes with impressive rice fields. This manner you possibly can take pleasure in an exquisite view during your experience.

Bandung is especially recognized for the various low cost designer garments that you could purchase in there. In addition to purchasing, you also have the opportunity to explore the gorgeous hilly landscapes. You can do this by hiring an area information who will drive you across the rice fields, tea plantations, scorching springs, lakes and numerous volcanoes for a day. Two suggestions are the Sari Ater Scorching Spring and the Patengan Lake.

You may as well go on an journey yourself: lease a motorcycle in the center and discover the quieter suburbs in addition to the busy city middle.

2. Bali

Monkeys in Ubud

Bali is essentially recognized for its many browsing places, snorkeling, diving, the gorgeous shoreline, green rice fields and so on. It is for sure the preferred island in Indonesia. Further disadvantages are (sadly) that Bali is often a bit costlier and busier than the remainder of Indonesia.

Tip: do you need lovely nature, rugged landscapes, abandoned seashores and few tourists? Then visit the overwhelming Nusa Penida. It is likely one of the nicest places I have ever been. You might be there in less than half an hour from Sanur.

On the west coast you can see numerous surf faculties (and many backpackers) in Seminyak, Kuta (here you have got very low cost lodging) Canggu and Uluwatu. On the east coast one can find many surfers and backpackers in Nusa Dua, Serangan and Keramas, particularly in the moist season. The waves are greater in this season than on the west coast of the island.

In the midst of Bali lies the gorgeous Ubud. The place can also be referred to as the cultural middle of Bali. Particularly, it’s backpackers who should not have a hard and fast schedule, who often stay here longer than they initially anticipated. The authenticity of the town in specific attracts vacationers very a lot.

What I personally assume is likely one of the most lovely locations in Bali is Munduk. Right here you will see that lovely landscapes consisting of mountains, tropical rain forest, crater lakes and very spectacular waterfalls. It’s nice to drive there by scooter from Ubud.

Another attraction for backpackers in Bali is Lovina. This can be a place situated in the north of Bali. You might have a big volcanic seashore right here that’s undoubtedly value a go to. Moreover, this place is called a very good vacation spot for spotting dolphins and climbing mountains. Personally, I feel Lovina is an fascinating vacation spot, although it is a little more costly than the aforementioned areas in Bali. Particularly round Nusa Dua.

Tip: know that totally different beaches in Bali (typically) have a robust present and high waves to have the ability to snorkel and dive nicely. There are definitely good options nearby to undertake underwater activities, for example at Amed and Padangbai, but in addition round Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida.

Padangbai is usually skipped by backpackers and used as a transit route to Gili Trawangan, to be discussed under.

3. Lombok & the Gili Islands

Chill out on Gili Meno – probably the most peaceable island of the three Gili’s

Lombok is an island situated east of Bali and so much less touristy than its huge neighbor. In the event you come to Indonesia for beaches and unspoilt nature, then this place is my choice over Bali. Lombok can also be a perfect destination for island hopping.

The island can also be recognized for its chili peppers. In the event you like spicy, attempt the actual local chilli pepper.

To the north of the capital, Mataram, lies the seaside resort of Senggigi. One can find right here, amongst different things, numerous beaches and reasonably priced lodging. I personally don't assume it's well worth the hassle. Actually, she is in specific a useful vacation spot for a stopover when you’re on Lombok. For example, earlier than you go to the Gili’s or to Bali.

Should you fancy a bit extra journey and need to challenge yourself both bodily and mentally, climbing Mount Rinjani is probably something you're in search of. With over 3,700 meters, it is the second highest volcano in Indonesia. You could have a shocking crater lake and a number of scorching springs, a welcome reward after a troublesome climb 🙂. Other adventurous suggestions in the world are Pergasingan Hill and the Tiu Kelep Waterfall.

Tiu Kelep Waterfall

When the draw was over, I used to be rewarded with these lovely waterfalls of Tiu Kelep

For surfing and the nicer seashores of the island, you need to be in Kuta. In this case you might soon think of Bali, however there’s also a place with this identify on Lombok. It’s fantastic to lease a scooter, go on an adventure and uncover the countless breathtaking beaches.

Pantai Mawun

The gorgeous Mawun Seashore in the Kuta area

You will discover the Gili Islands on the northwest aspect of Lombok. Gili Trawangan is the hotspot where backpackers come together and additionally the social gathering island of all of Indonesia. The opposite two islets (Gili Air and Gili Meno) are much quieter and less adorned for instance in a busy nightlife. Though I need to say that Gili Air can also be turning into extra touristy, the island is (unfortunately) creating enormously.

The “Gili's” are the last word spot for diving and snorkeling lovers. Do you know that you’ll not discover automobiles on these islands? Cycling or the old style horse-drawn carriage are the primary form of transport.

Accommodation on Lombok and the Gili Islands

4. Sulawesi

The Tongkonan village of Kollo-Kollo in Rantepao (Tana Toraja)

From (very) touristy to less touristy, that's how we will describe the island of Sulawesi. The island continues to be relatively unexplored and compared to, for instance, islands corresponding to Bali and Lombok, relatively few backpackers and other vacationers come here.

If I’ve to “designate” the half where backpackers are staying, then I say North Sulawesi. It’s because nearly all of the leading hotspots are situated there. For instance, think of totally different nationwide parks, volcanoes, waterfalls and ultimate diving and snorkeling spots.

So are you the kind of backpacker who likes to deviate from “what is common” and who likes journey and likes to be among the many locals? Then Sulawesi is the place to go.

Probably the most well-known places of the island are Makassar, Tana Toraja, Bunaken and Manado. What are you able to do akin to on and around these destinations? Under I’ve some ideas for you:

Laze on the gorgeous seashore of Bira Seashore situated in the fishing village of Bira in the south of Sulawesi. You may as well go snorkelling or diving at Bunaken Island (Manado), but definitely also at the Togian Islands and Bitung. From the port metropolis of Bitung you can also make a visit to Pulau Lembeh. In the Togian Islands you find yourself on bounty islands that you simply solely know from films 😉.

Furthermore, the walk along the two volcanoes in Tomohon is a must. This metropolis can also be regionally referred to as “Kota Kembang” and the volcanoes are referred to as the Lokon and the Mahawu. In this space you even have lovely highlands. The Linau Lake with its lovely colors and peaceful environment can also be value a look.

In case you are in Makassar, a go to to Fort Rotterdam is really helpful. She is the former headquarters of the Dutch in South Sulawesi.

Within the mountains of Tana Toraja a must-do is attending an area funeral ritual. Remember that totally different water buffalo and pig sacrifices are made in the course of the funerals. It isn’t unusual in the event you as a tourist are present at such a ceremony, as long as you deliver a sacrifice. These could be, for example, cigarettes, sugar and the like.

Ebook your Toraja tour on-line?

If you want to have already organized your trip via the impressive Toraja region, I advise you to do that via Local Guides. They offer numerous genuine tours with excellent guides.

Lastly, a visit to the Lindu National Park is a must in case you are in Central Sulawesi. The trail here is already an experience in itself. After you have arrived in the park, you possibly can take lovely walks and spot numerous wildlife alongside the best way. You’ll be able to consider unique animals akin to dwarf buffalo and wild boar. Brightly colored butterflies and numerous fowl species additionally commonly fly by. What is special is that the bottom level is at a peak of 300 meters. The top is greater than 2,350 meters.

Lodging on Sulawesi

5. Sumatra

So shut I came (Bukit Lawang)

Finally, the second largest island of Indonesia, Sumatra. On this lovely island you can see numerous volcanoes, crater lakes, totally different inhabitants teams (for example the “Mentawai tribe” on the Mentawai islands), green but untouched rain forests and pure wilderness. Additionally, you will discover tropical seashores right here, should you could have had enough of wandering by way of the jungle 🙂.

Most backpackers may be discovered in the north of Sumatra, partly because Lake Toba (see under) is situated in this area. However Medan can also be a well known spot among backpackers, notably due to the distinctive nature sights.

Ensure to try – I referred to as it – the deepest lake in the world: Danau Toba (Lake Toba). It was created after the Tobavulkaan erupted some 75,000 years in the past and was bigger than, for instance, a rustic like Singapore.

In case you like islands, make journeys to Belitung Island and Lengkuas Island. Within the first place, additionally, you will discover lovely Tanjung Tinggi Seashore. The massive rocks around the seashore virtually make this place a dream come true. If you want to go to the islets, you’ll be able to e-book a tour and go island hopping.

If you wish to go diving, I might advise you to do this at Pulau Weh. You will see spectacular corals and other revelations here.

Lastly, I recommend that you simply spot orangutans in Gunung Leuser National Park in Bukit Lawang. Outdoors of this monkey species, you will discover tropical rain forests with different endangered species similar to tigers, elephants, rhinos and the Thomas Leaf Monkey. You shortly imagine your self in the Disney-stunner Jungle Guide. Honesty is to say that the prospect of spotting a tiger, rhino or elephant just isn’t very excessive. However, the park is an expertise in itself. You’ll be able to easily organize the tour regionally, however booking in advance can also be an choice. I counsel you to do this by way of Local Guides.

6. Flores

Wae Rebo Village

The authentic Wae Rebo Village with the standard conical homes

Flores is turning into more and more fashionable within an hour's flight from Bali. A flexible island with unspoiled nature, lovely corals, special animals and rugged volcanic landscapes.
