Once I first went backpacking in Myanmar on the finish of 2011, there were no ATMs in this nation yet. No less than not for vacationers. That’s the reason we had to take our own dollars and trade them on the financial institution or on the street for the local foreign money: the kyat. And the greenback bills weren’t allowed to have any scratch, stain or anything.
Apart from a variety of problem with cash, the internet connections – if there were any – have been terribly sluggish. Anyway, we knew this beforehand.
Since 2011, occasions in Burma have modified, it has all develop into a lot more accessible to vacationers. Yet I hope that this particular country will remain out of the arms of mass tourism for a short while. As a result of it’s turning into increasingly well-liked is for certain.
I have now made several trips by way of Myanmar. And what I especially keep in mind very much are the intensely good individuals, lovely pieces of nature and the gorgeous temples. I will even always remember that special bus stop, where locals with goats came on the bus to promote food and drinks to the passengers.
Lesser sides? Sure there are. It may be extraordinarily dry and dusty, the local cuisine is just not all the time unbelievable, the distances are sometimes large and the smog and pollution in the cities don’t exactly make walking round a party.
In this article you will study more about why Myanmar is so liked by backpackers. I offer you an perception into the costs, the varied sights & actions and ideas that it is best to hold in thoughts throughout your preparation. Use this guide for planning your journey by way of this massive and especially unique country.

Backpacking Myanmar – costs
The costs I mention are in Burmese kyat and in euros. The change price that I exploit for that is 1,700 kyat = 1 euro.
Nevertheless, I instantly say that the kyat isn’t exactly secure. In April 2015, for instance, you still acquired 1,100 kyat for 1 euro. You’ll be able to examine probably the most present price on this web site.
To start with it’s good to know that in Myanmar you might have a lot less selection in phrases of hostels than in neighboring Thailand, for example, as “the Land of Smiles” has historically been the backpack nation in Asia. This decrease supply, among different issues, signifies that lodging prices in Burma are on common somewhat greater than you could be used to in other Southeast Asian nations. You’ll be able to often pay in each kyat and greenback, although I counsel you to guide online by way of Agoda or Reserving.com. Agoda in specific typically has aggressive costs, better than what the lodging themselves supply.
The availability in dorms (dormitories) isn’t big, however has risen considerably in current years. Definitely in vacationer locations comparable to Yangon, Bagan and Inle Lake you will all the time find a hostel.
In case you go to sleep in a dorm, rely on average around eight,500 to 17,000 kyat (5 to 10 euros) per bed. The typical room with its own toilet will value you a minimum of 20,000 to 34,000 kyat (12 to 20 euros). On this case I’m talking about simple accommodations corresponding to guesthouses.
If you want to sleep in a lodge, a room will value you 25 euros or more, regardless that one place is costlier than the other. For example, I skilled Bagan as comparatively low cost in terms of accommodation, whereas prices in Yangon have been somewhat larger.
Good to know is that breakfast is usually included in Myanmar.
Meals and drink
I personally discover the meals in Myanmar so much less than in nations like Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. Real style is usually missing. The costs, nevertheless, are comparable.
For example, you’ll be able to often purchase totally different sorts of road food for 500 to 1,000 kyat, that is lower than a dollar. Snacks are even on the market for 200 kyat (zero.10 euros). For a standard rice-oriented you spend between 1,500 to four,500 kyat (0.90 to 2.65 euros). Greens with out rice will often be priced between 1,500 and 2,000 kyat (1.15 euros).
In a supermarket or roadside restaurant, the typical bottle of water (1.5 liters) prices 300 to 1,000 kyat (most zero.60 euros), a can of soda 700 kyat (zero.40 euros). You pay round 2,500 kyat (1.45 euros) for a packet of Marlboro and half this quantity for native cigarettes.
When it comes to fruit, I have observed that locals typically sell luggage of sour mango and some spicy powder. One thing like this costs 500 kyat (zero.30 euros). You should purchase a guava for 1,000 kyat (zero.60 euros) and a kilo of bananas for two,000 kyat (1.20 euros).
Are you a espresso lover? An iced coffee with two espresso photographs will, on common, value round 2,000 kyat (1.20 euros).
Do not anticipate too much from Myanmar in terms of nightlife. In any case, no discos or flashy bars. You do have beer stations where you possibly can order a draft beer for 1,000 kyat (zero.60 euros). For a bottle of beer (zero.33 liters), you’ll be able to rely on quantities between 1,500 kyat (zero.90 euros) and 2,500 kyat (1.45 euros). In the native outlets, a bottle of wine costs on common round 14,400 kyat (eight.45 euros).
Tables and chairs are also typically positioned outdoors, where locals and backpackers collect to have a drink. This is not all the time alcohol, but typically additionally a cup of tea. Talking about tea, with meals you typically get free Chinese language or inexperienced tea provided. Very tasty!
Transport in Myanmar is reasonable, though the prices for national transport are a bit greater than in extraordinarily low cost nations comparable to Cambodia and the Philippines. Under an summary of the choices you will have in Burma:
Inside the metropolis you employ the taxi for longer distances. In Yangon, for instance, you pay from the airport to the center eight,000 to 10,000 kyat. Converted this can be a most of 6 euros. Within the cities you need to use the Grab app to reserve a taxi. You’ll be able to instantly see what it prices and not need to barter, just know that the worth is often 20% larger than the standard amount of a daily taxi.
Apart from the taxi, you also have small pick-up vans where you possibly can sit in the back, though you truly only see locals doing this. Identical to in a Jeepney, you’re sitting right here reverse different individuals. The prices are around 200 to 800 kyat per journey (maximum 0.50 euros).
In fact there are also the regular city buses. Know that these are sometimes overcrowded and stop fairly often. The costs are on common 200 to 600 kyat (maximum 0.35 euros).
What you also see rather a lot are trishaws, or tricycles. The prices per journey are between 500 and 1,000 Kyat (maximum 0.60 euros).
Tuktuks also exist in Myanmar, though you don't see as a lot as, for instance, in Thailand. The costs are slightly larger than these of a trishaw.
Lastly, you need to use horse and carriage inside the smaller areas, though I’m not in favor of this myself. You may as well see them in Bagan and Pyin U Lwin. The prices are corresponding to these of a taxi. You may as well lease them for a day, it will value you a minimum of 24,000 kyat (14.10 euros).
For nationwide transport you often use long-distance buses. They are often subdivided into local and VIP buses. The typical value of a few bus journeys is between 6,000 and 25,000 kyat (3.50 to 14.70 euros). You possibly can e-book a ticket for a small additional charge in your guesthouse or lodge, but in addition at the bus station itself.
For instance, you pay from Yangon to Hpa An (6 hours) between 6,000 and 16,000 kyat (3.55 to 9.40 euros), depending on whether you journey with a traditional or sleeper bus. From Yangon to Bagan (10 am) you’ll be able to rely on prizes between 13,000 and 29,000 kyat (between 7.65 and 17.05 euros).
The most effective recognized bus firm (VIP) is JJ Categorical. You may also buy your ticket online by means of them.
The practice is comparable in worth to the bus, however it takes lots longer to get from A to B. You could have sleeping cabins in totally different courses but in addition simply picket benches. The lowest class is usually ridiculously low cost, but in addition uncomfortable.
Consider 5,000 to 37,000 kyat (maximum 21.75 euros) for Yangon-Mandalay (14 hours). The prices range relying on whether or not you select a traditional chair (very uncomfortable), higher class seat or mattress.
Tip: if you must choose between bus and practice, I recommend the bus. Practice journeys typically take longer and are usually much less snug.
Lastly, given the lengthy distances in Myanmar, the aircraft is a logical selection. Unfortunately, flying is sort of expensive, especially in case you examine this with the practice or bus. Home flights of an hour are often priced between 80 and 100 euros.
Excursions and actions
For the temples in Bagan you pay 25,000 kyat (14.70 euros) entrance.
In the event you go to the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, it can value you 10,000 kyat (5.90 euros). Entrance to the nearby Sule Pagoda is 4,000 kyat (2.35 euros). The doorway to the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda is 10,000 kyat (5.90 euros).
A visit on Inle Lake will value you 15,000 to 20,000 kyat (a most of 11.75 euros). You additionally pay 15,000 kyat (8.80 euros) to enter the world.
If you want to lease a information, rely on 10,000 kyat (around 6 euros) per day. This can be helpful, for example, to information you thru Bagan and to seek out out extra concerning the totally different temples.
Finances per day Myanmar
The prices in Myanmar could also be barely greater than you’re used to in different Southeast Asian nations. As a finances traveler, rely on 34,000 to 51,000 kyat (20 to 30 euros) per day. This is primarily because of the accommodation, the place you’ll be able to easily spend 15 euros on, simply as aside from the hostels.
In the event you journey together with someone, you’ll be able to in fact share the costs and subsequently end up cheaper.
In case you are in search of more comfort and more typically sleep in motels than guesthouses and hostels, then your day by day prices shall be round 75,000 kyat (44 euros) per day.
Once I take a look at my very own Myanmar journey in 2019, I’ve traveled quite low price range, though I all the time had my own room. In complete I misplaced 785,900 kyat in 22 days, converted around 462 euros. This quantities to 21 euros per day.
Backpacking Myanmar – destinations and places of curiosity
There is a lot to see in the nonetheless relatively unknown Myanmar. Under I listing 10 of the nicest locations you’ll be able to visit in the nation.
I didn't find Yangon (also called Rangoon) as special. It’s primarily a busy, car-laden metropolis. By the best way, individuals looked at me like I used to be a movie star. This isn’t so unusual, as a result of once I stayed right here a couple of years ago, there have been hardly any tourists in Myanmar. As well as, blonde is in fact not exactly a standard hair shade in Asia. However even in the present day you’ll be stared at each now and then.
What it is best to undoubtedly not overlook if you end up in this city is a visit to the gorgeous Shwedagon Pagoda. Probably the most sacred temple from Myanmar that consists of a minimum of 50,000 kilos (!) Of pure gold leaf. There are various different temples, Buddha statues and many locals who want to inform you extra concerning the shrines.
In Yangon you’ve many more lovely temples to visit. Beneficial are the Sule Pagoda, Chaukhtatgyi Paya, the Botahtaung Pagoda and the Maha Wizaya Pagoda.
What I also appreciated to stroll over was the Bogyoke Aung San Market. A coated market the place you should purchase the whole lot. Particularly the gorgeous artworks and the various colors stand out right here. Furthermore, the sellers usually are not intrusive here, as you typically expertise in Thailand.
Finally, I need to offer you a tip: take a day journey to the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, an interesting rock temple that’s also referred to as the Golden Rock. A big golden block balances on Kyaiktoberg, something that appears quite unreal. It is just over 200 kilometers from Yangon and is a perfect stopover on your approach to Hpa An.
The gorgeous Bagan (additionally referred to as Pagan) has lots to offer. But one thing that matters listed here are the various temples that you’ll discover throughout the town. When you thought you had your portion in Angkor Wat, then you’re improper.
It’s true that Bagan is fairly touristy because of all this magnificence. It’s subsequently not essentially the “pure” Myanmar that you simply get to see right here, regardless of the various historical and cultural points of interest.
In complete there are more than four,400 (!) Totally different temples in the town. You will subsequently have to select which of those Buddhist buildings you will visit. I make various strategies under:
The Sulamani Guphaya Temple is fabulously lovely to see. It is located in an exquisite green, wooded space and inside one can find numerous work, glimpses to the surface and Buddha statues. In case you are in more murals, also go to Upali Thein.
Another eye-catcher is the Ananda Temple. What stands out listed here are the 4 big golden Buddha statues. Every image represents a separate wind course. This is by the best way one of the crucial visited temples in Bagan, so be ready for a lot of vacationers. Good to know is that the Ananda Temple Pageant is held right here yearly.
If you want to see a ravishing sundown (or rise for the early birds) from above, go to the fairy-tale Bulethi. Another good place for this is the Shwesandaw Pagoda, though this temple is visited much more often. Finally, Shwe-Gyu-Gyi can also be extremely impressive. You’ll be rewarded with lovely views from all three temples.
Good to know as of March 1, 2016 it’s (sadly) not allowed to climb the totally different temples of Bagan. Allow us to hope that this choice shall be reversed sometime in the longer term.
Tip 1: lease an electrical scooter to explore the world. This costs 5,000 kyat (around 3 euros) for a day.
Tip 2: when you like sightseeing, go on a river cruise from Bagan to Mandalay.
Tip three: for those who actually need to do something unique, watch the dawn from a scorching air balloon.
Are you on the lookout for a much less recognized various to Bagan? Then journey to the mysterious Mrauk U. Okay, it takes some effort to get there, however you then even have one thing 🙂.
three. Ngwe Saung Seashore
If you think of Myanmar, do you think of beaches? I personally didn’t have this, and I need to inform you that nations comparable to Philippines and Indonesia definitely score larger in this space.
There are definitely a number of nice locations where you’ll be able to loosen up. Best after an extended bus trip or when you have had a sniff of culture.
Ngwe Saung Seashore is an example of this.
It is truly pure coincidence that I and my travel companions ended up there, since we picked up a night bus from Yangon (6 hours of travel) on the receipt.
But what an exquisite seashore this is. Once we have been here, no one was actually here. We had a big sand plain all by ourselves.
Also go to the southern a part of the seashore the place you can find a small island. If it is low tide, you’ll be able to walk over it to the sand strip. At the beginning you can see a considerably totally different image of a mermaid. On the aspect of the island, among the many rocks, I met three locals who have been tattooing each other. They advised us that there are snakes among the rocks. Whether this is the case continues to be a thriller to me.
In the night there’s nothing to do here. Play a recreation at your seashore house with different backpackers, have a drink or learn a e-book and do not fall asleep too early to wake up early for an exquisite seashore day. That is Ngwe Saung Seashore.
I can only advocate that you simply go to a singular piece of nature. Definitely if, for example, you need to trade the bustle of Yangon or Bagan for a quiet, peaceable place and need to deviate from the crushed monitor. It’s also good that many locals come here at the weekend. Oh before I overlook: the sunset could be very lovely right here.
four. Inle Lake
Nestled between totally different mountains, Inle Lake is, together with Bagan, one of many essential vacationer points of interest of Myanmar.
In addition to the various fishermen, you’ve got several villages (floating villages) which are constructed on stilts. On the cottages you will see floating gardens where all types of different greens are grown. Alongside the best way you’ll more than likely be waved by cute, enthusiastic youngsters who reside in the floating villages.
Inle Lake is a minimum of 20 kilometers lengthy and no more than 5 kilometers extensive.
If you want to go to this extra, I recommend that you simply keep in the nearby city of Nyaung Shwe. Along with a ship trip, you can even completely discover the world with a bicycle. The Nyaungshwe Temple, amongst others, is value a visit.
Tip: do a three-day trek from Kalaw to Inle Lake.
5. Kengtung Hill Tribes
Southeast Myanmar is unquestionably one of the crucial genuine elements of the country. Identical to Ngwe Saung Seashore, a go to to the mountain peoples around Kengtung is just not a specific vacationer activity. Scrumptious isn't it?
The individuals in the villages are all very pleasant, they assume it's great to take a photograph with you. Allow them to see the end result, they assume this is implausible.
Alongside the best way you will come across numerous Akha and Ann villages in the center of the mountains. The Ann (typically also written as “Enn”) are among the most conventional ethnic minorities in Myanmar. You see them chewing on the conveyor belt on something that you simply typically see in Myanmar: the betel utility. In combination with spitting not precisely a recent face, however the whole lot will get used went.
The women from this group have black tooth, by the best way, and not because they let their tooth decay. It’s something that they consciously do with charcoal, activated carbon. This can be a sign that they are married, a token of beauty and the stuff – charcoal – protects the tooth. The Ann are additionally referred to as the happiest individuals in Myanmar, because they all the time have an enormous smile on their face.
The Akha are additionally a minority group that you simply typically find in the mountains near Kengtung. Additionally they reside in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and China.
In the course of the trek, you should purchase local handmade products comparable to jewellery in quite a lot of villages. Impressive to see how grateful these individuals are once you buy something.
Tip: be sure to deliver some goodies for the very poor locals.
You’d virtually overlook that Mandalay is the second largest city in Myanmar. But it is so. The most important metropolis in the nation is Yangon. Nevertheless, it isn’t very nice, although you could have quite a couple of nice places to go to.
Probably the most lovely structure that one can find right here is, so far as I’m involved, the Mahamuni Pagoda. Inside the temple is a glowing golden Buddha statue. (Believing) men might come to the statue to cover it with gold leaf. This makes the Buddha greater and greater. For spiritual causes this isn’t allowed for ladies.
Tip: buy a small piece of gold leaf for 1,000 kyat (0.60 euros) and stick it on the Buddha statue.
It’s also one of the crucial essential Buddhist shrines in the nation. It is good to know that tourists are in the minority here: it is filled with monks here.
One other must-see is the Hsinbyume Pagoda. A fantastic white temple, which due to its colour differs enormously from the temples that you simply see in the world.
For a nice view, I recommend you go to Mandalay Hill. Go up on foot, on the best way you will move a variety of fascinating viewpoints where you’ll be able to cease to take an image. You start the 230 meter climb at two big lion statues. Sadly Mandalay Hill could be very busy, especially when the sun goes down. Early in the morning, nevertheless, there’s virtually no vacationer in sight.
All through the town you will see many spectacular buildings which are value a go to. A number of the points of interest are the Nat Temple, the Mandalay Fort, the Minguin Temple and the Royal Palace.
Lastly, I might advise you to lease a motorcycle (1,500 kyat, $ 1.25), so you’ll be able to explore the town and its lovely sights independently.
Hsipaw, also called Thibaw, is a mountain village in the east of Myanmar. This is turning into an increasingly widespread place for vacationers who need to do a (multi-day) trek.
It’s a place the place you’ll be able to go in case you simply need to escape the crowds in the large cities. For example, Hsipaw is a logical cease after you have got been to Mandalay. This tour takes six hours by bus and costs a mean of 6,000 Kyat ($ 5).
The surroundings of this place is impressive. For example, the hike to the waterfall is advisable, alongside the best way you will cross very lovely locations. Within the mountains you also have the opportunity to do a homestay with the locals. For this, rent a guide in the town, because the majority of mountain individuals don't converse English. This guide can ensure that you could stick with the locals.
Do you need to do a draw? Then take a pick-up truck to Namshan, this experience takes six hours and prices +/- 5,000 kyat (around three euros). In Namshan you’ll be able to go into the mountains or select to do the hike to Hsipaw. Alongside the best way you’ll cross probably the most impressive and distant areas of Myanmar, extremely beneficial. This stroll (80 kilometers, two to 3 days) is called one of the crucial lovely in Burma.
Tip: if you want to go from Lake Hsipaw to Lake Inle, make the gorgeous practice journey from Hsipaw to Pyin Oo Lin. Stop here for a day to view the Anisakan Falls. From Pyin Oo Lin you possibly can then continue to Lake Inle.
eight. Ngapali Seashore
It is a lot more touristy here than at Ngwe Saung Seashore, for example, though you need to take this with a pinch of salt. For those who examine Ngapali Seashore with, for example, Maya Bay on the super-busy Koh Phi Phi, this can be very quiet there.
Nice to know: it’s claimed that the identify of this seashore was named by an Italian traveler after the town of Napoli. It’s because he saw many similarities with Ngapali Seashore.
Should you solely journey by way of Myanmar, are on the lookout for different backpackers and have a pretty big finances, this can be a place that I can advocate. Definitely in the high season, which runs from November to February.
Nevertheless, in case you are on the lookout for a extra native seashore that draws fewer tourists, then Chaung Ta Seashore or Ngwe Saung are higher choices to go.
Tip: take a ship trip to Pearl Island for snorkeling. One other suggestion is to visit the idyllic Pirate Seashore.
There’s extra than just seashore in the town. For instance, you possibly can lease a motorcycle and drive to Zalat Htone, an island that may be reached by bike and is also referred to as Black Sand Island. Another enjoyable activity is to go to the close by fishing villages where you see locals with their sea catches strolling in the early morning. You may as well drive a bit of further to the great village of Thandwe (7 km).
The world between Kalaw and Inle Lake is nearly like a desert
Kalaw is mostly a fantastic mountain village to chill out for a couple of days. I went there from Hpa An and relaxed for a number of days before I continued on the mountain bike to Inle Lake.
You have got lovely nature, spectacular viewpoints, the temperature is pleasant and there’s additionally a nice cave temple to go to. That is the Myin Ma Hti. Lastly, you need to say that there are surprisingly good restaurants. Indian, Italian and good robust native espresso; you’ve got all of it there.
The rationale why most vacationers go to Kalaw, is to make the well-known multi-day trek to Inle Lake. But again, so far as I'm concerned, Kalaw has extra to supply than just that.
10. Hpa An
Last however not least: Hpa An, a metropolis in the south of Myanmar the place you will see few tourists. This is primarily as a result of Hpa An shouldn’t be on the “logical” route.
The rationale why vacationers come to this city is the gorgeous surroundings. Within the city itself there’s not rather a lot to do besides the morning market, check out the Shweyinhmyaw Pagoda and get to know the super friendly locals who stay here.
Returning to the world: go to the Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda anyway. This can be a special rock formation in the middle of a lake with a golden stupa on prime. A bridge runs to it, be sure to take off your footwear and socks or you’ll not have access to the rock.
From the highest you will have an exquisite view and you see Mount Zwegabin by the best way. If you need, you’ll be able to climb this mountain. Will you go up the greater than 3,800 steps to get to the top and be rewarded with a singular view?
Lastly, there are several caves for the adventurers to discover. Which must you have got seen? In any case, the Kawgun Cave and the Bayin Nyi Caves. Inside you can find many work, carvings, Buddha statues and lovely reliefs. Definitely with Bayin Nyi you typically virtually have the thought of ending up in a fairy tale.
Preparation backpacking Myanmar: what you could know
1. Greatest travel time to Myanmar
The dry interval in Myanmar runs from the top of October to March. Hardly any rain falls. Know that will probably be lots hotter from mid-February, nice for the seashore but not pleasant for the cities. For my part, the perfect journey time is November to mid-February.
You may as well visit Myanmar in the rainy season (Might to October), though you must take into consideration a heavy bathe of 1 to 2 hours every day. If you want to benefit from the green nature and need a seashore, go to the country on the end of October. You’re then precisely in the transition from the wet season to the dry season.
2. Myanmar visa
You need a visa to be able to backpack in Myanmar. This visa is valid for 28 days.
You’ll be able to request an eVisa from the Myanmar authorities, this costs $ 50. You additionally have to add a passport photograph. Inside a number of days you’ll receive a PDF with which you will receive the required stamp in your passport upon arrival in Myanmar. Please word that you need to use the visa within 90 days of the appliance.
What you can do is, identical to me, apply for the visa on the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok. Unfortunately, the prices have gone up. The costs have been no less than 1,600 Baht since 1 December 2016 and it takes one to some working days earlier than you’ve the visa. It may well even be organized the identical day in case you are prepared to pay 2,290 Baht.
Myanmar does not have a consulate in the Netherlands the place you possibly can go. You possibly can interact a Dutch get together to arrange it, however since you possibly can simply organize it yourself online, that is truly unnecessary.
3. Myanmar cash
Until lately you have been obliged to take along creased Dollars that you might trade on the street or at the bank for the native foreign money, the kyat. PIN was not potential for tourists. As we speak the occasions have changed (luckily) in that regard.
These days you’ve got a number of ATMs in every metropolis where you’ll be able to go. The maximum quantity which you could pin is 300,000 kyat. Transformed this corresponds to 176 euros. Weet dat je per transactie 6.500 kyat (three,80 euro) commissie betaalt.
